The first hint of an Ohio art renaissance caught our
attention in the news last week. It told of a new form of tree art; colorful knitted pieces
worn by a pear tree in
Yellow Springs, Ohio.
After playing some phone tag, we finally spoke with multi-media
artist Nancy Mellon about the project. It all began as a public art
project in October 2007. The first venue was this lucky street tree in front of the
Emporium coffee shop.

When the art group was asked WHY?
they posted this on their
JafaGirlArt web site:
Because we
can, because it's fun,
because it makes people smile,
because it brightens up a dreary winter's day,
because children go ooooooh!aaaaaaaah!
because!!!!!!
Life is too short to be getting yer knickers in a knot
The project has been great fun for the artists, donors, town folk and passers
by. Pockets have been added to some of the knit pieces, leading to poems,
pictures and jokes being deposited for all to share.
In the midst of all the media hubbub, the KnitKnot Tree boasts a new honor --
a young couple was married beneath the tree on Friday,
March 14th.
Word has it they made quite a pear!
