Natural turf good for QB

QB Ben Roethlisberger appreciates a natural surface

The Steelers have been steadfast in honoring their players' wishes when it comes to the field surface for home games. Heinz Field still has natural grass.

The field gets dual-play from the Steelers and Pitt Panthers, as well as a rigorous round of high school playoff games in November, after the grass has stopped growing for the season.

That combination of heavy play, coupled with the seasonal nature of Pittsburgh weather, usually leaves the field a mess by Thanksgiving. Amidst the cries for artificial turf, the Rooney's have held to their guns and devised a method to re-sod the field that has worked fairly well the past couple of years. They install Big Roll sod within days after the high school playoff games are over, giving Heinz Field a new surface for the remainder of the football season.

"I'm glad we weren't on FieldTurf. That grass - you know, the soft Heinz Field - might have helped a little bit."

BEN ROETHLISBERGER
Steelers Quarterback

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger praised the natural turf this week. On December 28th during his final home game, Big Ben was smacked-down by two Cleveland Brown defenders, causing his head to whiplash into the turf. Ben credits the natural surface for a mild concussion instead of a more serious injury.

That's a strong endorsement for natural grass playing fields!
