Height = Roots

Simple formula for a better lawn

  Gardening columns and magazines spend a great of time listing recommendations for having a nice lawn... that lush green carpet of weed-free grass... a lawn the Jones family next door looks to with envy.

With summer approaching, there is one simple formula for having a better lawn: MORE HEIGHT = MORE ROOTS

It's been my observation that most lawns in Pennsylvania are cut too short.
Everyone wants that "golf course look" with a closely cut, manicured lawn. Hard to believe that short grass can be a bad thing, but it is.

Unless your lawn consists of bentgrass, like the golf green at your local golf course, chances are that it will do much better if you raise your cutting height one setting. Most lawns in the northeastern US are mowed in the two to three inch height range, so if your mower is currently set at 2½-inches, raise it to 3-inches.

A three-inch mowing height is much better than two-inches. Why?  Because longer grass produces deeper roots. This makes lawns better are getting soil moisture as the weather heats-up and dries-out. (Longer grass is also much healthier in shady areas, since the grass blades have more surface area to intercept light)

That's it, plain and simple, raise that cutting height!  Your lawn will have a better root system and be better equipped to deal with summer!

P.S. Be sure to keep your lawnmower blade sharp too!
